The Automobile 1899

The Automobile 1899

Tempera on canvas This piece was commissioned as an illustration by the Curtis Publishing Company founded in 1891, once one of the largest and most influential publishers in the United States. Times were changing in 1899 and the automobile (derived from the Greek autos meaning self and Latin mobilis meaning movable) is making its way into society. Clearly society still had to adjust to this new innovation.
