Watson Indianapolis

For better road holding on the oval track at Indianapolis, the center of gravity of this Watson race car, built specifically for the Indy 500, is positioned toward the inside of the track.

It was one of the first racing cars made of fibreglass and magnesium rather than aluminium. The weight was concentrated towards the inside of the banked oval racetrack. The driver could adjust the suspension during the race. The constructor was one of the most famous engineers and racing car builders that the Indy 500 has ever known: A.J. Watson. As early as the end of the 1940s he was actively involved in preparing cars for the Indy races and from around 1955 to 1965 one third of all participating cars were either built or prepared by him. In that period the race was won six times by a Watson.
