This was the conservative Karl Benz’ modest attempt to concede to modern times, but he was reluctant to make many changes to this model which dates back to the early 1890s. An example of this is the adherence to lighting by candles. Technically, however, a few changes had been made; the drive-belt transmission now had four forward gears and one reverse and the crankshaft was encased. This car is fitted with a hill strut. This Benz was initially a great success, but in spite of its technical improvements sales soon declined simply because the model was dated.
